As in 2018 and 2022, the great adventure of the Biarnais in the Coupe de France ended in the seventh round. And like the two previous epics, coach Patrick Gauthier’s players, once again, came very close to qualifying this Saturday evening.
In 2018, the Lotois pushed the Aurillac team into overtime, only losing 3 to 2, and in 2022, the Biarnais only lost 2 to 1 against a Bergerac team playing in Nationale 2. after leading 1-0.
This Saturday evening, the AFBB players were, once again, up to the occasion.
However, the challenge was significant on the pitch of an Espaly team which plays in Nationale 3. But this Saturday evening, the Biarnais, once again, held their own against their evening opponent. Although playing away, on the field of a team from Haute-Loire which plays a division above, the Lotois played their luck to the fullest throughout the 90 minutes of this meeting.
Diligent, united, well in place, the Biarnais, during the first forty-five minutes of the match, did not allow the locals to obtain clear opportunities. Although the Haute Loire players had the ball, the good defensive organization of the visitors did not allow the Espaly players to pose any danger to the Biarnais goal and at the break, the score was still 0-0.
In the second period, the Haute Loire players accentuated their domination and forced Lotois goalkeeper Nathan Bouges to intervene twice on two local offensives.
But time passed and the scoreboard still showed 0-0.
At the hour mark, the AF Biars Bretenoux players were very close to taking the lead on a volley from Théo Prieux. Despite their efforts, the locals were unable to find the fault against an AF Biars Bretenoux team that was still as strong and diligent as ever.
As we approached the end of regulation time, this match in the seventh round of the French Cup tilted in favor of the Haute Loire players in the 89th minute.
On a local offensive one minute from the end of the match, the locals obtained a penalty which the Espaly striker transformed with a strike into the top corner, scoring the only goal of this match.
The Biarnais, who stood up to their opponent throughout the match, left the Coupe de France through the front door.
