Martin St-Louis “loves how his team plays defensively”

When we look at the Canadian’s season so far, we notice that the club’s defensive play is, let’s say, uninspiring. The team allows a ton of goals per game, so the losses pile up.

It’s hard to win games when you’re allowing 4.06 goals per game on average, a high in the NHL this season.

Obviously, part of all this is attributable to the young defensive brigade, but the fact remains that the results are not great. At the moment, it’s difficult to say that CH is playing well defensively…

Unless your name is Martin St-Louis.

At a press briefing today before the match, the Habs coach talked a little about his team’s play… and he said that he “loves” his team’s defensive play.

Really?

In the eyes of the coach, it is difficult to play against CH given that the club provides good opposition in its zone.

Reminder: the Canadian allows on average 4.06 goals per game, a high in the NHL this season.

Obviously, this statistic is not only attributable to the team’s defensive play. The goaltending isn’t great this season, but that doesn’t change the fact that they don’t have much help from their defense.

That said, St-Louis especially considers that CH’s problem is with its offensive play. He is aware that his club has a lot of time of possession with the puck, but he finds that his guys do not generate enough offense as a result.

Is this really the Habs’ problem? Difficult to say… but I have the impression that he mainly made such comments to take some heat off the shoulders of his young defensive brigade. Because quite frankly, it’s difficult to be impressed by CH’s defensive play this season.

Could we see an improvement last Thursday? Yes… but a match less worse doesn’t excuse a near-complete season of horrible defensive play.

Let’s see if the club will suddenly start playing better defense on a regular basis… or, according to Martin St-Louis, if it will continue to be a difficult team to face defensively.
