The road to CAN 2025 delivered its verdict for several teams on Friday, in a day full of twists and turns. While Morocco confirms its status as favorite with a new show of strength, the Comoros sign a historic qualification, relegating Gambia and Ghana to disappointment.
Already qualified as host country, the Atlas Lions did not relax their intensity. Opposing Gabon, they delivered a masterful performance at the Stade de Rabat, winning with a crushing score of 5-1. With five victories in as many matches, the Moroccans send a clear message: they are aiming for the coronation in 2025.
Coelacanths continue to surprise Africa. Opposed to a determined Gambian team, the Comorians won a historic 2-1 victory, synonymous with qualification for their second consecutive CAN after that of 2021. Despite a quick goal from the Gambians, the Comoros reversed the situation thanks to exemplary solidarity and a clinical finish.
With this victory at the Berkane Stadium, the Comoros finished in second place in Group A with 9 points, thus eliminating Gambia, which failed to qualify for the third time in a row. A huge disappointment for the Scorpions, who had great ambitions after their recent progress.
Once among the giants of African football, the Black Stars suffered a premature elimination which would be a landmark. Hanging on by Angola (1-1), they failed to qualify for the CAN, a first since 2004. Jordan Ayew had opened the scoring for the Ghanaians, but the Palancas Negras equalized, sealing Ghana’s fate . This elimination marks a period of deep questioning for a team which is struggling to regain its former glory.
