LGujan rugby was playing in style when Jean-Marc Lanne-Petit arrived at the club. In six seasons, he raised it to Federal 1 before retiring and returning during the championship. This first experience at this level 1 will be painful both on a sporting and human level. The rest, everyone knows it, Gujan-Mestras was able to bounce back and achieve a dazzling season of Fédérale 2 which will bring him back to the box above.
In nine seasons at the club, Jean-Marc Lanne-Petit’s guideline has remained constant “to create a strong playing identity by relying on young players whose primary goal was to take pleasure and give it.” All these years have been full of emotion for the club: “I am grateful for the freedom I had to implement the game that I love,” he confides. Last season was one of the strong markers for the group. “We had to make decisions, part with players while other key players left us,” continues Lanne-Petit.
The ball, magic object
How would the reconstruction of the group go? “I put enormous pressure on myself,” admits the technician. I gave everything, I went to the extreme with players, especially the relays. Distant trips have united us. The shift has taken place, the group has reached collective fullness.”
Can this playing philosophy have its place in Fédérale 1 in the face of defensive pressure and the physical dimension of the opposing teams? For Jean-Marc Lanne-Petit the objective is simple: “We must keep the same beliefs, hold the ball, move it, distribute the players across the entire width to improve any initiative taken. We have to play standing up as much as possible, encourage all gestures of continuity, be more precise in our game launches.”
But it’s not just that! The common thread throughout the training sessions is attack. It relies on the coach’s relationship with the ball. “I find it magical!” blurted Lanne-Petit. He is capricious, we must prevent rebounds. It’s better to hold it in your hands than to run after it. We train twice a week. It’s not much! The players must therefore drop everything on Sunday. Make no mistake, each match is a new challenge to maintain and the next ones are really big.” On the eve of moving to Tyrosse, the promoted Gujanese points his nose just behind his opponent, well practiced at Federal 1.
