The return in front of the net of Tristan Jarry did not benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lost 6-2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.
Jarry, who was getting his first start since being recalled from the American League on November 9, and his first in the NHL since October 16, gave up five goals on 38 shots in front of the Penguins net (6-10 -3), who thus suffered a third defeat in a row (0-2-1). The veteran goalkeeper allowed two goals in the first 10 minutes of play of the game.
Dmitri Voronkov and Zach Werenski each scored a goal and an assist in the Blue Jackets’ victory (6-8-2), a first in seven outings (1-5-1) for the team.
Werenski notably set the table for Mathieu Olivier’s goal which gave the home team a 3-2 lead at 16:27 of the second period. The defender carried the disc to the opposing zone before relaying to Olivier on his right, allowing the latter to advance to shoot at the edge of the right circle.
Voronkov then increased Columbus’ lead to 4-2 at 1:56 of the third when he headed back a Kirill Marchenko shot.
Zachary Aston-Reese, Damon Severson and Cole Sillinger, the latter late in the match in an empty cage, also found the back of the net for the winners.
Sean Monahan collected the 300th and 301st assists of his career. Elvis Merzlikins, playing in his 200th NHL game, made 21 saves en route to a 71-84-31 record since his NHL debut.
Anthony Beauvillier found the back of the net for the Penguins, with the help of Sidney Crosby, who thus amassed the 1016th assist of his career to join Joe Sakic in 13th place all time in this regard.
The other goal of the losers was the work of Michael Bunting.
