As a reminder, the USMA refused to play this semi-final due to the wearing, by the Moroccan club, of jerseys displaying symbols deemed politically provocative and not respectful of the sovereignty of Algeria. The Algerian club, with the support of the Algerian Football Federation, therefore brought the matter before the CAS, contesting the CAF decision which had allowed the Berkane Renaissance to play with these jerseys.
During the hearing held by videoconference, USMA lawyers, Frenchman Arnaud Constantin and Swiss William Steier Heimer, accompanied by the club’s representative, Mr. Hassani, pleaded for respect for Algerian sovereignty. Opposite, the session, led by a Spanish judge with two French and Swiss assistants, also brought together representatives of the Algerian, Moroccan and African football federations.
During the three hours of this session, each party presented its arguments, but at the end of it, the CAS announced that the verdict would be rendered at a later date, thus extending the wait for the USMA.
