Terrible! Standard will collapse, Charleroi will rise again

The CIES Observatory presents Wyscout data on shots taken and conceded from the danger zone (the central part of the penalty area) by teams in 63 leagues around the world. With 6.9 more shots from this area attempted than taken per game, the Portuguese from Sporting CP have the best record in absolute terms.

In Belgium, Club Bruges tops the rankings. He is ahead of RC Genk, Union and… Charleroi. Anderlecht arrives in seventh position while Standard is in an unflattering second place.

In Challenger Pro League, the two lowest ranked teams are Seraing and FC Liège.

Charleroi will go back on track

This ranking is interesting but it is even more so if we analyze the difference between points achieved and points expected according to a statistical model built from the difference in shots taken and conceded from the danger zone per match and club. This means that a club with a positive gap is probably a little outclassed while a club with a negative gap could turn things around with a little luck.

In this little game, we see that Bruges could do much better but that the club which should move up the most in the ranking is none other than Charleroi. On the other hand, Anderlecht and Standard are a little in overdrive and could collapse, but not as much as Ghent or Antwerp.

In Challenger Pro League, the situation is worrying for Liège but also for La Louvière, RWDM and Zulte Waregem. The Francs Borains and the young people of Anderlecht, on the other hand, are on the right path.
