Ashley Lawrence and Vanessa Gilles shine in the Women’s Champions League

Two Canadian defenders found the back of the net on Wednesday in the Women’s Champions League to help their team add three precious points to the preliminary phase standings.

In Group B, in Glasgow, Scotland, Ashley Lawrence scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory for Chelsea at Celtic.

In the 32nd minute of play, the 29-year-old fullback jumped on a rebound from teammate Erin Cuthbert in the penalty area. Her first attempt was blocked by an opposition defender, but her second shot found its way to give the English club the lead.

It was a third victory in as many matches in the competition for the Blueswho sit at the top of their group ahead of Real Madrid. Canadian Kadeisha Buchanan, who also plays for Chelsea, was not used in this match.

In group A, Franco-Ontarian Vanessa Gilles hit the target for Olympique Lyonnais, who defeated AS Roma 3-0 in the Italian capital.

This result confirms the title aspirations of the Lyonnaises, who have been perfect until now with three victories and no goals conceded.

AS Roma coach Alessandro Spugna did not use striker Évelyne Viens in this match. The Quebecer had to watch her teammates suffer defeat from the end of the bench. The Italian club still occupies provisional 2nd place in the group, which gives access to the quarter-finals.
