“Everything speaks in the universe; There is nothing that does not have its language.” said Jean de La Fontaine. This quote took on its full meaning in recent days in Mexico when the Popocatépetl volcano, guardian of the skies and passions, offered a striking spectacle.
In an incandescent breath, he drew a heart of smoke, a message of eternal love sent to his beloved Iztaccihuatl.
“This romantic postcard was observed from the localities of La Sabana, La Agrícola and San Diego Acapulco, in the municipality of Atlixco, in Puebla,” reports Mexican media NMás.
“Popocatépetl seems to offer a heart to his beloved Iztaccihuatl, as in the famous legend of the love of volcanoes,” added the media, which shared the images captured by users.
The legend
Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl are the volcanoes at the origin of an ancient love legend.
According to Aztec history, the warrior Popocatépetl promised to return from battle to marry the Tlaxcalan princess Iztaccihuatl. However, a lie made the young woman believe that her beloved was dead, and sadness consumed her until her last breath.
Finding her lifeless, the warrior decided to watch over her eternal rest by transforming them both into mountains. Popocatépetl, burning with love, continued to throw fumaroles in eternal memory of this passion.
