Ferland Mendy, Franco-Senegalese defender playing for Real Madrid, today expresses regret over his decision to represent the French team rather than Senegal. According to the newspaper L’Équipe, Mendy would have confided his bitterness over this choice, particularly after a disappointing Euro 2024 where he played a limited role under the colors of the Blues.
In 2018, when he was taking his first steps at the high level, Mendy was approached by Aliou Cissé, coach of the Senegalese team. However, the defender then preferred the promise of an international career with the France team, hoping to shine on the European and world stage. This decision, influenced by his formative career in France and the prestige of the national team, is today questioned by the player.

Far from initial expectations, Ferland Mendy’s career with the Blues did not experience the expected growth, and his short playing time during Euro 2024 seems to have fueled his regrets. By choosing France, he sacrificed the possibility of representing his roots and asserting himself as a major figure within the Senegalese selection, now seen as one of the best in Africa.
