Among other things, the UN resolution:
“Consider that the sports sector can contribute to the fight against the harmful effects of climate change.”
“Is aware that sport, including sport practiced by people with disabilities and people living with rare diseases, has an important role to play in promoting peace and development, physical and mental health , gender equality, the advancement of women and girls and respect for human rights as well as in the fight against racism and racial discrimination.”
“Takes note of the Olympic Charter”.
“Welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2014 between the International Olympic Committee and the United Nations, which calls for intensifying efforts towards sports-based initiatives that encourage development social and economic and to strengthen the numerous partnerships that United Nations agencies have established with the Committee.”
“Affirms that the Olympic and Paralympic Movements make an invaluable contribution by making sport a unique means of promoting peace and development.”
“Invites future organizers of the Games and other Member States to include sport, as appropriate, in conflict prevention activities and to ensure the effective implementation of the Olympic Truce during the Games.”
“Considers that major international sporting events must be organized in a spirit of peace, mutual understanding and international cooperation, friendship and tolerance, all forms of discrimination being excluded, and that it is appropriate to respect the unifying and conciliator of these demonstrations.”
“Appreciates the growing contribution of sport to development and peace through the tolerance and respect it promotes, to the empowerment of women and young people, of the individual and the community, and to the achievement of the objectives of physical and mental health, education and social inclusion.”
“Encourages all parties concerned to promote and facilitate the exploitation of sport for sustainable development and, in particular, to strengthen education, (…) to promote tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and to facilitate social inclusion, conflict prevention and peacebuilding.”
“Encourages Member States to include sport and quality physical education and activity in national sustainable development strategies.”
“Further encourages Member States, based on their national priorities, to use sport as a lever for education and employment, for health and nutrition, for gender equality and the integration of people with disabilities , for sustainability and the hosting of major sporting events, as well as for financing and evaluating the impact of sport on sustainable development.”
“Supports the independence and autonomy of sport as well as the mission of the International Olympic Committee, which is to lead the Olympic Movement, as well as that of the International Paralympic Committee, which is to lead the Paralympic Movement.”
