Ferland Mendy, Franco-Senegalese defender, regrets having chosen the France team instead of Senegal. A career choice which today confronts him with the question of his roots.
Ferland Mendy, the Franco-Senegalese defender playing for Real Madrid, recently expressed regret over his decision to represent the French team rather than Senegal, according to the newspaper L’Équipe. In 2018, the left side received a call-up from former tactician, Aliou Cissé. Unfortunately, the latter did not flinch.
The French newspaper specifies that it was Mendy’s very limited playing time at Euro 2024 which destroyed his desire to play for the Blues.
Trained in France, Mendy chose to play for the Blues, hoping for a prestigious international career.
However, this choice seems to weigh on him today, when he could have played one of the figures of the Senegalese selection, now considered one of the best African teams. This revelation raises the dilemma faced by many binational players: career and visibility on one side, roots and cultural attachment on the other.
