Hectic day on waivers in the NHL

Things are moving today in the NHL as three players were placed on waivers by their respective teams.

The Chicago Blackhawks have submitted the name ofAndreas Athanasiou.

  • Aged 30, Andreas Athanasiou is a 6’2″/190lbs left-handed center selected in the 4th round (110th overall) during the 2012 draft. He has only played 5 games this season, not collecting any points. He is currently in the final year of his contract paying him an average of $4.25 million per season and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

A real rocket on skates, Athanasiou could potentially interest the Canadian to improve the team’s offensive Top-9. His salary could, however, cool the enthusiasm of many teams.

Just days after acquiring him from the San Jose Sharks via trade, the Toronto Maple Leafs have submitted the defenseman’s name Matt Benning.

  • Aged 30, Matt Benning is a 6’1″/203lbs right-handed defenseman selected in the 6th round (175th overall) in the 2012 draft. So far this season, he has played 7 games but has not recorded a point. He has 2 remaining years left on his contract earning him an average of $1.25 million per season.

A defensive-minded defender, Benning is a player whose name has been linked to the Canadiens recently as GM Kent Hughes is, according to several sources, looking for an experienced defender to add to its defensive brigade. It could therefore potentially interest the CH.

Finally, the Colorado Avalanche submitted the name of the goalie Kaapo Kahkonen.

  • Aged 28, Kaapo Kahkonen is a 6’2″/217lbs goaltender selected in the 4th round (109th overall) in the 2014 draft. He has only played one game so far this season. He is currently in the final year of his contract earning him $1 million per season and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

After another worrying performance from Cayden Primeau today, the Canadian could potentially be interested in a more experienced goalkeeper to come and assist Samuel Montembeault this season.

All NHL teams now have until tomorrow to indicate their interest.

Let’s see if one of the three players will be claimed and if the Canadian will be tempted to raise his hand.

More details will follow.
