Since the start of the regular season, star Alexander Ovechkin has reminded the rest of the National Hockey League that he still has his touch around the opposing nets and that his 2023-2024 season, which was rather half-baked, half-sweet, is truly a thing of the past.
Like his Washington Capitals, the Russian is enjoying success this year, as he has hit the target 10 times in 14 games. It constitutes one of the explanations for the 10 victories of his training. It’s a contrast to the previous campaign, marked by the captain’s ups and downs. Certainly, he scored 31 goals, but he went through some slumps and the Caps for their part snatched a place in the series with pain and misery.

However, the story is different so far and Ovechkin, with his 863 career goals, is 31 behind Wayne Gretzky, the all-time leader in this regard. The entire NHL will therefore be watching him between now and the end of hostilities in April and many are wondering if he will manage to break the record in 2024-2025.
Interviewed by the site NHL.com, former renowned hockey player Eric Lindros has his opinion on this subject.
“I think he could make it this year. If you look at his production rate, he fills the net and gets his goals in spades, he said. That’s pure Alex, isn’t it? You know, he won’t get one in one game and then come back and score two. […] It’s possible that he will succeed this year. I don’t know, it could be the end of February.”
To surpass Gretzky, Ovechkin will have to total 32 goals in 68 outings. Thus, he will have to finish with at least 42 goals; that’s exactly what he amassed in 2022-23, but he had played 73 games.
The Capitals will return to action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on TVA Sports.
