Last Friday the election for the post of president of Rugby Europe was held. At the end of the vote, it was the Dutchman Jahnein Pieterse, supported by the British nations, who was largely elected at the head of the continental federation with almost 71% of the votes, to the detriment of the Frenchman Christian Dullin (29%). However, contrary to what we wrote in today’s edition, this vote will not be unfavorable to the candidacy of Abdelatif Benazzi for the presidency of World Rugby which will take place next Thursday.
According to our information, during this elective General Assembly, the Rugby Europe Board held a vote to designate the candidate to support in the election for the presidency of World Rugby. In the first round, Benazzi obtained 32 votes, or 49.23%. For their part, Rinaldo benefited from 16 votes, or 24.62%, and Robinson 17 votes, or 26.15%.
In the second round where six voters abstained, the former French international obtained 39 votes or 66.10% while Robinson only received 20 votes or 33.90%. The 2 representatives of Rugby Europe on the World Rugby “Council”, the newly elected president Janhein Pieterse and Veronika Muehlhofer, should therefore respect the choice of the members of Rugby Europe during the vote for the presidency of World Rugby on Thursday and provide the 2 votes allocated to the European institution in favor of the French candidate.
