Charleroi’s victory this Saturday evening against Westerlo did a lot of good. Rik De Mil took the opportunity to affirm his support for Mehdi Bayat.
The previous weeks have not been easy for Charleroi. The club lost five times in a row, including the severe elimination in the Cup against Patro Eisden Maasmechelen.
Against Westerlo, the Zebras were finally able to put an end to this terrible series. A superb goal from Daan Heymans was enough to take home all three points, finally.
After the match, the Zebras coach Rik De Mil was particularly happy. “I am especially happy for my players. It was very difficult for them. We lost several weeks in a row, not always deservedly. At some point, doubts arise,” he told Sporza.
He also mentioned Mehdi Bayat. The supporters attack him virulently week after week, and that was the case again this Saturday. “I’m not going to say much, but I find that Mehdi is the target of too much negativity,” regrets De Mil.
“He’s someone who’s been here for 20 years and this club is doing well. We’re investing the money and resources we have to build something. He’s doing a fantastic job. The way he’s treated the players and the staff during the losing weeks, for me, it’s incredible. They do a lot of work here and I wanted to say it, because I’m proud to be able to work here,” he concludes.
