TORONTO | In the Canadian locker room, the feeling is unanimous: the situation is embarrassing and we must find a way to get out of this bad streak.
“It’s getting heavy. It’s extremely frustrating, said David Savard. We can’t get out of our torpor, we have trouble generating scoring chances. It’s frustrating.”
“The mood is not very good at the moment. We still try to stay positive, said Josh Anderson, visibly irritated. We try to find our enthusiasm, do the right things. Once we win one, we’ll be okay.”
It’s all well and good to say it, but to achieve it, you have to put in the effort.
And currently, apart from a few rare exceptions (Brendan Gallagher, Josh Anderson, David Savard, Emil Heineman, Jake Evans, Lane Hutson and Lucas Condotta), no one seems ready to pay the price.
Martin St-Louis, who was trying to see the positive in this meeting, only half-heartedly admitted that the level of effort was perhaps not the same on everyone’s part.
“In general, yes. Is that everyone? Not necessarily,” he said.
“Sometimes, when you lack confidence, it can be heavy for the player. Maybe that reflects on his work ethic. But, in general, it’s not a question of work ethic,” he continued.
An overall nebulous answer.
Gallagher’s example
One thing that is certain is that if the Canadian wants to score more goals, he will have to get his nose dirty. Do like Brendan Gallagher and accept being hit with sticks in the calves and double-checks in the back.
“We have to take an example from him,” Savard agreed. He goes to the places that hurt and manages to find the net.
“We need everyone to contribute on offense. Otherwise, we won’t win, insisted Nick Suzuki, blanked in a fourth consecutive match. I include myself in that. I expect more from myself and I’m sure the other guys do too.”
At least the team’s leaders seem to be aware of the problem. It now remains to take the necessary measures to resolve it.
After the match, the Canadian remained in Toronto, where he will train on Sunday before leaving for Buffalo. He will face the Sabers on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
