Premier League. Liverpool wins against Aston Villa and widens the gap at the top

Liverpool consolidated their first place in the Premier League on Saturday November 9 at Anfield against Aston Villa (2-0), a ninth victory in eleven matches which allows the Reds to be five points ahead of Manchester City.

Goals from Darwin Nunez (20′) and Mohamed Salah (84′) allowed Liverpool to widen the gap with the Citizens by Pep Guardiola, beaten earlier 2-1 at Brighton. The Mersey club now has 28 points after eleven days, compared to 23 for its current runner-up Manchester City, the reigning four-time English champion.

Liverpool continue their great start to the season under new coach Arne Slot. Jürgen Klopp’s successor pocketed a 15e victory in 17 matches, all competitions combined. Conversely, Aston Villa’s bad patch continues with this third match without a win in the Premier League (two defeats and a draw) which sends the Birmingham club back to 8e place.

Unai Emery’s team opened the score on a counter-attack launched by Virgil van Dijk, extended by Salah and concluded by Darwin Nunez, although very off-center when he struck (20′, 1-0). Salah sealed the match by scoring his eighth league goal of the season, again on a counter-attack from the Liverpool area (84′, 2-0).

THE Reds were able to count on reflex saves from Caoimhin Kelleher on a header from Amadou Onana (37′) then a direct corner from Lucas Digne (38′). They were also happy to see the referee turn a blind eye to a shirt pull in the open area from Conor Bradley (58′).
