More than 4,000 police officers mobilized for the “champions parade” on the Champs-Elysées

Some 70,000 people are expected on the most famous Parisian avenue and at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe to celebrate the French athletes who won medals (or not) during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. More than 300 athletes are expected to parade and receive the National Order of Merit or the Legion of Honor from the hands of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron – who initiated this grand parade – and“former glories of French sport”according to the Elysée, recipients of these high distinctions of the nation.

More than 4,000 police officers, gendarmes, soldiers from the Sentinelle system, and municipal police officers must be mobilized, according to a system identical to that applied during the Paris Games. From 10 a.m. on Saturday, an extended perimeter banning all motorized traffic will be put in place around the Champs-Elysées and the Place de l’Etoile, materialized by a red zone on the website anticiperlesjeux.gouv.fr.

“Traffic in the West Paris area” sera “very complicated tomorrow”warned the police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, calling for people to avoid the area. The metro stations 1, 2 and 6, located in the protection perimeter, will also be closed; the RER A will not serve the Charles-de-Gaulle-Etoile stop.

“The shops on the Champs Elysées will be closed”

Inside this red zone, an anti-terrorist protection perimeter called SILT (internal security and the fight against terrorism) will be in effect from 11 a.m. To enter, you will need to have either a ticket to the “champions parade” – the 60,000 free tickets were snapped up in less than two hours on Wednesday afternoon – or accreditation for the event. Only local residents or emergency services (firefighters, doctors, etc.) will be granted exemptions.

“Shops and establishments open to the public will be closed from the Champs-Elysées roundabout to Place de l’Etoile”with the exception of hotels, Laurent Nuñez also announced, without specifying whether these businesses would be subject to compensation for the loss of earnings.

“The controls will be very thorough”warned the police prefect, who advises ticket holders to arrive from 1 p.m. in the two sectors that will accept the public: nearly 25,000 people along the Champs-Elysées, starting from Avenue George-V, and more than 30,000 people on the Place de l’Etoile, where the presentation of decorations and the “best of” concert of the four ceremonies will take place, starting at 9 p.m., on a stage surrounding the Arc de Triomphe.
