Martin St-Louis’ playing system is becoming more and more talked about.
Playing in a hybrid system defensively speaking clearly seems to mix the guys up. And this morning, on the radio, Gilbert Delorme made a fuss about this.
In his eyes, the gaming system isn’t worth a damn.
What we notice is that Martin St-Louis defends his playing system a lot and that he defends his players a lot publicly. He refuses to throw them under the bus the vast majority of the time.
Does this put them in a position of strength? It could be.
I say that because Michel Therrien raised the following theory: what if seeing a GM who was an agent and a coach who was a player creates a dynamic where the two men keep a history of protecting players? Of too much protect the players?
The former CH pilot wonders if this makes Jeff Gorton happy, a manager with a more “classic” managerial background, let’s say.
We are starting to see more and more speeches from people who wonder if the Canadian will replace Martin St-Louis as driver. I think it’s too early to think about that.
But at the same time, I am of the opinion that having discussions about how the coach must adapt to keep his position in the long term, that’s a good thing. He doesn’t say he has too much job security either since that takes accountability for the results in the rankings.
In other words: he must think about defending his job, which will be done by winning matches. And if to defend his job, he has to defend his players less and adapt the way the guys defend themselves in their zone… so be it.
The goal is not to change everything after a difficult month. The goal is to use the last month to make changes that will help the club win hockey games.
