Before taking the reins of the Saudi Arabian selection, Hervé Renard had submitted his candidacy to become the coach of Senegal.
In an interview with Le Monde, the former Morocco coach confided that he had finally withdrawn his candidacy and revealed the reason.
“There were discussions. I had one wish, to have Omar Daf, a former Senegalese international, as my assistant. But Omar is the coach of Amiens, in Ligue 2. And this condition was not possible to fulfill immediately,” assured Hervé Renard.
And added: “I therefore decided at this precise moment to withdraw my candidacy. For the moment, Senegal has not yet chosen. Coaching Senegal, one of the best African teams, would have been a great challenge, it’s true, but all the conditions were not met.
Remember that the Senegalese Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture has decided not to extend the contract of coach Aliou Cissé, which expires on August 31, 2024. Senegal, winner of CAN 2021, was eliminated in the round of 16 of CAN 2023 by the host country, Ivory Coast.
Aliou Cissé had led the national A team since March 2015. He won the 2021 CAN in Cameroon, after reaching the final of the 2019 edition in Egypt.
