After his failure at Standard, Grejohn Kyei is also a flop at Charleroi: here are the reasons

Grejohn Kyei, however, no longer seems to have that of his trainer. At Standard, the center forward only lasted 6 matches before being classified in the undesirable category. In Charleroi, it was also after 6 championship matches that he was sidelined. After a few weeks on the Mambourg side, we can already draw the same conclusion that Ivan Leko had drawn up in Sclessin. The player’s transfer is a fiasco. How often when a club carries out a “Panic Buy” – panic buying – in the last hours of the transfer window.

Not a mentality problem

Mehdi Bayat may have believed in the beautiful story and placed his hopes on the affected ego of the Frenchman on the banks of the Meuse, but it was written from the beginning of the operation that it would be a bad idea. Because a club buying the striker that its enemy club no longer wants after a month and a half was unheard of. This data was a first bad signal sent to supporters. But this choice to take Kyei mainly sanctions the lack of anticipation of the leaders in this position.

The sports unit may say that it was in the footsteps of the former Rémois before his arrival at Standard, the truth lies in the fact that it had bet everything on the arrival of Zeqiri. The Swiss’ refusal pushed the Zebras into embarrassment. And Mogi Bayat via his network and Samuel Zambelli, who regularly works with Sporting (as recently on the transfer of Nkuba to Genk), therefore drew to bring Kyei as indicated in our columns of last September 7.

Except that if the Carolos decision-makers had really delved into the archives of the scouting department, they would have realized that Kyei has never been a great scorer despite his 10 goals in Ligue 1 during the 2022-2023 financial year. “He had put almost half of his achievements on penalties (4), tempers Valéry Lefort, follower of Clermont for the newspaper La Montagne. Then, he played less because the Auvergnats transferred Nicholson. Grejohn is an average plus player. It’s not Jonathan David. But he never had any behavioral problems here, quite the contrary. He’s an adorable guy, kind, smiling and always in an even mood.”

More of a physical concern

If Kyei was not selected on Saturday at Cercle Bruges, De Mil even preferring Stulic, it is not for a behavioral problem. Maybe that’s the worst part. It was his performances that led him to stay at home while the Sambrians took on water at Jan Breydel. “I decide based on what I saw in training and I therefore decided to take Dabbagh, Sylla and Stulic”, the technician confirmed.

Is it a trust issue? The Parisian had, however, started his new adventure in the best possible way by scoring a goal on his debut against Beerschot, even coming close to the double, and by achieving a good performance in the game. Without subsequently managing to capitalize on this performance of quality with the highlight of this first catastrophic period at Standard during the Walloon shock. Since then, De Mil opted in his 11 for Dabbagh against Louvain and even Sylla at Patro Eisden in the Cup when he could have taken advantage of this game to try to revive the bored number 99.

That’s all the merit of T1. His management and his decisions are guided by what he sees on the ground and this is what makes him appreciated by his group and always credible in their eyes. If Kyei doesn’t play, it’s because he doesn’t deserve to. His physical delay has long raised questions whether in the Cité Ardente or in Charleroi. And a knee discomfort is currently following him and won’t let him go, preventing him from being 100%, although he had never had any problems before.

Will he be back in the group for the visit of Westerlo this Saturday? If not, the season may definitely be very long for him. If so, a mountain stands before him to reverse the trend.

Knee discomfort prevents him from being 100%.
