A chilling investigation: the vast majority of these toys are dangerous for our children

Barbie, Lego, Playmobil, Smoby or Fisher-Price: here are the best times to buy toys from major brands for Christmas or Saint Nicholas’ Day

In total, 102 toys were purchased on sites and apps such as Temu, Shein, Ali Express or even Amazon or Cdiscount. The results are clear: 86% of toys purchased were found to be non-compliant and 80% dangerous. “Our objective was to demonstrate the danger of these unbranded toys, sold at ridiculous prices.“, explains Christophe Drevet, general director of the French federation of childcare toy industries.

Of course, this study is carried out by the biggest toy brands who want to maintain their market share. This means that smaller European brands that sell items on online platforms can very well comply with the standards. This study rather targets toys sold at very low prices and imported into Europe from Asia, in particular.

“Last February, the same organization tested around twenty toys purchased on Temu, 19 were recognized as dangerous. Temu then withdrew them from its offer”, further indicates the article from 60 Millions de consommateurs. “But we’ve seen them reappear on other platforms.”further indicates Christophe Drevet. The problem is that French and Belgian customs do not know how to check all the containers that bring these toys into our homes. Already in 2020, a survey by the European Toy Federation pointed to this figure of 80% of dangerous items.

Faced with this investigation, Amazon, Shein and Temu promise to do everything possible to avoid selling dangerous toys. “Be careful, because even if they are mainly sold on online platforms, these dangerous toys and childcare items can sometimes be distributed in unexpected places, such as Christmas markets.“, indicates another 60 million consumers.
