XV of – Tevita Tatafu’s considerable weight loss to be able to perform at international level

Tevita Tatafu could have his first selection with the French XV on Saturday against Japan. The right pillar of Aviron agreed to lose weight to reach and above all be competitive at international level

“Today he has more activities, more travel” : Tevita Tatafu is heading towards a first selection with the XV of against Japan (November 9) and William Servat is rave about his young right pillar.

The 22-year-old Aviron Bayonnais player changed dimensions last season, joining the French team for the first time last June so that he could familiarize himself with the group. Now eligible, the Tongan native is ready to discover the international level. He has also made efforts to lose weight as Servat revealed in the exclusive interview granted to Olympic noon.

“We had already worked the same for Emmanuel Meafou. Last June, when Tevita joined us to prepare for the tour in Argentina, he weighed 158 kilos. Yesterday (Friday), he was at 140 kilos, while retaining his phenomenal power, especially in melee. […] A player like him, with the technical qualities he has, fits in superbly well. He became aware, in a few months, of the requirements at the international level. It was a work of co-construction with his Bayonne club.”

It will surprise a lot of people

Tuesday, during high intensity training in Marcoussis, Tevita Tatafu wore the holders’ chasuble. It was Rochelais Georges-Henri Colombe who trained with the substitutes and who seems to be heading towards a role as a finisher at the Stade de France.

In the event of a first cape, the Bayonnais will be particularly scrutinized. Without killing the craze, William Servat warns that it will take time for his player: “Now, he remains a young player. He will undoubtedly lack rhythm in the first match, and that is normal.” But for the former hooker to warn: “He’s going to surprise a lot of people.”
