No, Oliver Kapanen can’t play with the Rocket

If the Canadian wanted to play Oliver Kapanen outside of Montreal, he could not send him to the Rocket.

Since he is not a first round pick, having been selected in the second round in 2021, the young Finn must comply with the European clause in his contract. His two options are CH and Timra, in the Swedish elite league.

Jean-Charles Lajoie also verified this information on Tuesday at JiCconfirming Renaud Lavoie’s comments earlier on the show.

“The European clause, in his case, takes precedence over that of the American League. Furthermore, as he is not a first round pick, if the Canadian decided that his place was no longer in Montreal, regardless of the time of the year, he cannot return him with the Laval Rocket. He must return it to his home or affiliate team in Europe,” explained Lajoie.

In his first 11 games this season, Kapanen was rather discreet with only one assist and a differential of -3. The 21-year-old center player is just starting out in the National League, after five professional seasons in Finland.

Last year with Kuopio’s KalPa, he amassed 34 points, including 14 goals, in 51 games.
