Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani today underwent successful arthroscopic shoulder surgery, the team reports.
The operation, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, was intended to treat a torn labrum resulting from a dislocation of the left shoulder suffered on October 26.
Team management said Ohtani should be ready for the opening of camp in February.
In his first season with the Dodgers, with whom he won the World Series against the New York Yankees, Ohtani had a .310 batting average with 54 home runs and 130 RBIs.
He also became the first player in baseball history to hit at least 50 home runs and steal at least 50 bases.
In addition to leading the team in long balls, Ohtani led the Nationale in fielding percentage (.390), power average (.646), fielding average plus power (1.036), total goals (411), runs scored (134), RBIs (130), plate appearances (731) and wins compared to replacements (9.2 according to Baseball-Reference and 9.1 according to Fangraphs).
Before joining the Dodgers, Ohtani underwent Tommy John surgery, which prevented him from pitching. If everything goes as planned, he should be able to regain his place on the mound next season.
In his final campaign as a pitcher with the Angels, Ohtani went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 132 innings over 23 starts.
