Novak Djokovic will not be in Turin to defend his title: the Serbian, seven-time winner of the ATP Masters, announced that he was giving up due to an injury to compete in the event which brings together the 8 best players of the year (10 -November 17).
“It’s an honor to qualify to play the Masters in Turin and I was happy to be there, but due to an injury I won’t be playing next week,” he wrote on his Instagram account.
“My apologies to those who had planned to come see me. I wish all the players a good tournament, see you soon”added the double title holder, aged 37.
If he does not specify the nature of his injury, Djokovic’s withdrawal is not a surprise. The former world No. 1, now 5th in the ATP rankings, had already withdrawn from the Masters 1000 in Paris and had previously suggested that his season was over.
He did not win any ATP titles this year, a first since 2006, and found himself in the shadow of the Italian Jannik Sinner and the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. “Nole” however saved his year by winning the Olympic singles title in Paris, the only one missing from his immense list of 24 Grand Slam titles.
