A breath of hope crossed the hearts of Senegalese supporters at the idea of seeing Hervé Renard, the French coach double African champion, take the reins of the national team. However, this hope quickly faded when Renard announced his decision to withdraw from racing, citing personal and professional reasons that led him to choose another path. He was recently named coach of the Saudi Arabian team, opening up about the obstacles that prevented him from seeing the Senegalese project through to fruition.
Since the sudden departure of Aliou Cissé in October, Senegal has been searching for a new coach capable of taking the team to new heights. Renard, who has in-depth knowledge of the country where he has lived for several years and where he shares his life with Viviane Dièye, the widow of the emblematic Bruno Metsu, seemed to be a candidate of choice. His application was also submitted with enthusiasm. However, a key condition of his work vision could not be met, resulting in his decision to step down.

In a statement, Hervé Renard clarified: “There were discussions. I had one wish, to have Omar Daf, a former Senegalese international, as my assistant. But Omar is the coach of Amiens, in Ligue 2. And this condition was not immediately possible to fulfill. I therefore decided at this precise moment to withdraw my application. » For the 56-year-old technician, the support of Daf, former assistant to Aliou Cissé, was essential to build a technical team that matched his ambitions.
Although his decision seems regrettable, Hervé Renard does not hide the fact that the Senegalese project would have fascinated him. “Training Senegal, one of the best African teams, would have been a great challenge, it’s true, but all the conditions were not met,” he added in an interview with Le Monde Afrique .
