Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti explained on Monday that he ‘didn’t have the heart to talk about football’ after violent floods which caused more than 200 deaths in southern Spain.
‘We are very sad. I hope you understand that I don’t have the heart to talk about football. It’s a special match for me, I would love to talk about that, but I will try to talk as little as possible,’ said Ancelotti, who appeared very touched at a press conference on the eve of his reunion with his former club, AC Milan, in the Champions League.
‘Football takes a back seat. With what happened, we don’t have the energy to work. We inform ourselves, we watch, we read. And what happened is truly incredible, terrible,’ he added.
Real Madrid, who were due to travel to Valencia on Saturday in La Liga, saw their meeting postponed and therefore did not play this weekend, just like Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano. The other matches of the twelfth day were maintained, despite the opposition of several coaches and players.
‘No one should have played’
‘No one should have played this weekend, it would have been the right decision to make. But it’s not us who decide,’ regretted the Italian technician, believing that he had ‘no power’ to go against the decisions of the authorities.
Asked about the political management of the tragedy, Ancelotti explained that he was not there to ‘give his opinion’, but that he understood ‘the frustration’ of the victims, some of whom ‘lost everything’.
