we know the referee of the match (and it’s a very bad memory for French supporters)

Szymon Marciniak (43) will be on the whistle for the Champions League match between PSG and Atlético de Madrid this Wednesday (9 p.m.). The Polish referee is particularly known to supporters of the team for having directed the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina.

He is the one who was appointed by UEFA to lead one of the shocks of this fourth day of the Champions League. As communicated this Monday by the European body, Szymon Marciniak (43 years old) was chosen to referee the match between PSG and Atlético de Madrid, this Wednesday at the Parc des Princes (9 p.m.).

The mention of the Pole’s name brings back painful memories to supporters of the France team. Marciniak was indeed on the whistle for the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina (3-3, 4 tab. to 2). Several of his decisions were widely commented on, such as the penalty whistled for a foul by Ousmane Dembélé on Angel Di Maria in the 23rd minute.

PSG-Newcastle referee in November 2023

Highly experienced at the highest level, Marciniak has already managed 48 Champions League matches in his career. He was notably the main referee of the PSG-Newcastle group match, in November 2023 (1-1). PSG managed to equalize in added time on a penalty from Kylian Mbappé, following a less than obvious handball from Tino Livramento. Before, two penalties not called, for contact between Hakimi and Gordon (69th) and a handball from Miley (72nd), had driven the Parisians crazy.

With only one victory in three days of the Champions League, PSG must move forward against Atlético de Madrid. The Parisians are currently 19th in the league phase, knowing that you have to be in the top 8 to be directly qualified for the round of 16.
