Morocco: CAN 2025 threatened

Algeria – Could the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN) in Morocco be brought forward earlier than expected? Such an eventuality is now being considered, due to the repercussions of the crisis shaking FIFA. While the draw for the 2025 Club World Cup is scheduled for December 5, several uncertainties surround FIFA’s ability to maintain this competition, which is nevertheless dear to its president Gianni Infantino. With a tournament scheduled for June 13 to July 15, 2025, criticism is increasing regarding the congestion of the calendar and the risks to the health of players, causing tension in the world of football.

The new format of this Club World Cup, expanded to 32 teams, promises exciting clashes with teams like Real Madrid and Al Ahly. However, several observers believe that this “too much” competition unnecessarily tires out already overworked players. The revolt is led by figures like the Ballon d’Or winner, Rodri, who even mentioned a possible strike due to the busy schedule. Aurélien Tchouaméni, French midfielder, also criticized the frequency of matches, which increases the risk of injuries. Despite FIFA’s efforts to promote this new edition of the tournament, Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish Liga, doubts the viability of the event and emphasizes that the financial promises made to clubs remain uncertain.

At the same time, FIFA signed a partnership agreement with a household appliance giant, but this does not rule out the possibility of cancellation or postponement of the competition. Morocco, the organizing country of the CAN 2025, is closely following these developments, aware that the holding of this Club World Cup could affect the CAN calendar. Initially scheduled from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, the CAN will be held in a winter period, contrary to the initial wishes of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and its president Fouzi Lekjaa, who would have preferred a summer organization. This preference is motivated by the desire to attract a greater number of tourists and to organize the matches in favorable climatic conditions, more conducive to the sporting spectacle.

With the CAN 2025 qualifiers in Morocco soon coming to an end, a climate of uncertainty continues to hover over the final date of the competition. CAF, like the FRMF, remains attentive to FIFA’s decisions. In the event that FIFA fails to secure the necessary funding for the Club World Cup, the FRMF could seize this opportunity to bring forward the CAN 2025, thus allowing a return to the summer dates initially desired. Such a decision would have the advantage of guaranteeing optimal conditions for players and spectators, while strengthening the tourist attractiveness of Morocco.

In the meantime, the qualified selections, including the Algerian national team, will have to prepare for all eventualities. The possibility of rescheduling or even cancellation of the Club World Cup could modify CAN plans, influencing team preparations and the logistical organization of this long-awaited event on the African continent. Regardless, CAF and Morocco seem ready to adapt to the circumstances, in the interest of the competition and fans of African football.
