The latest report from the American cabinet Kearney reveals a worrying decline of Casablanca in the hierarchy of the most influential global cities. The Moroccan metropolis is now positioned 105th out of 156 cities evaluated, showing a regression of five places compared to the previous edition according to our cross-checking of information.

The downgrading of the economic capital of the Kingdom is part of a downward trajectory observed since 2019, when it occupied the 98th position. Even more worrying, the city is absent from certain specific rankings, notably that of “smart cities”. Its future potential, measured by the outlook index, places it in 137th place, reflecting the considerable challenges it faces.

The world podium remains dominated by traditional metropolises: New York, London, and Tokyo maintain their supremacy. Asia asserts its presence with two Chinese cities in the top 10: Beijing and Shanghai, respectively 6th and 8th. In the MENA region, Dubai maintains its leadership at 24th position, ahead of Doha (51st) and Abu Dhabi (59th).

The Kearney study highlights the growing importance of environmental issues for urban centers. Cities, particularly vulnerable to climate disasters, face significant financial and material losses which impact their development.
