La Gantoise has some problems at the goalkeeper position. Not that Davy Roef is a problem, but the club will still get stronger…
Davy Roef is in great form at La Gantoise, and finally seems to have reached the level that the club expected of him on a regular basis. But at 30, he is at the end of his contract next June, and Ghent will therefore have to step up the pace in the negotiations.
According to The Latest Newsdiscussions between La Gantoise and Roef regarding an extension are already underway and are progressing well. But another problem could arise: the role of second goalkeeper, until now reserved for Daniel Schmidt.
The Japanese goalkeeper is not satisfied with his playing time, he who joined Ghent in the hope of becoming a starter there. He only played the Cup match this week, and a qualifying match for the European Cup last August (the return match against Vikingur, once qualification was assured in the first leg).
Arriving in January 2024 in Ghent, Schmidt has 114 matches for STVV and therefore hopes for another status. He should leave La Gantoise, and perhaps the championship, during the winter transfer window; the Buffalos will therefore need a backup for Davy Roef.
The Danish press announces that Arnar Vidarsson, sporting director of Ghent, already has an idea in mind: the club is in negotiations to bring Jonathan Fischer (22 years old), Danish doorman from Fredrikstad, Norway. It is estimated at 1.7 million euros by Transfermarkt. The Scandinavian sector has always been heavily exploited by La Gantoise and Belgian clubs in general in the past.
