At KRC Genk there are many players who can possibly aim higher than the Jupiler Pro League. One player has already secured a dream transfer: Mike Penders. The latter has already signed with Chelsea, but for now he is second choice behind Hendrik Van Crombrugge. What does he think of the current situation?
Penders, second goalkeeper of Genk
Penders started the season with an injury to Van Crombrugge, but once the latter recovered he returned to the bench. The former Anderlecht goalkeeper immediately noticed the difference with Brussels. In Genk there is much more peace and quiet.
For example, Van Crombrugge is not always blameless but this is rarely mentioned. This is partly because Racing Genk are winning and playing good football, but also because Genk is less under the microscope.
Van Crombrugge
We still wondered (especially among the supporters) if it was not time to put Penders under the crossbar. Van Crombrugge has, however, raised his level and has been much more consistent in recent weeks.
Penders spoke to Het Belang van Limburg about having to play mainly with Jong Genk. “Of course I would like to play more. There is no exact distribution of roles between Van Crombrugge and me. At the start of the season there were discussions with the coach about this, but Fink is transparent with me. I am ready when he needs me,” said the very young KRC Genk goalkeeper.
Chelsea bought Penders for 20 million euros. He will return to London at the end of this season.
