What if Zidane became a country coach?

Saudi Arabia appear to be at a crossroads, with Roberto Mancini set to step down as coach. After a series of disappointing results, including a defeat against Japan (0-2) and a frustrating draw against Bahrain (0-0), the pressure on the Italian coach is at its peak.

Despite initial support from the Saudi FA, Roberto Mancini’s recent controversial statements have tarnished his image, precipitating discussions about his departure. Having arrived with a bang after his success in Italy, Mancini could soon leave his post. However, his contract, valued at between 25 and 30 million euros annually, includes a clause requiring a financial agreement and royal authorization, making negotiations more delicate. Meanwhile, the federation is already looking for its successor.

Among the rumors, that of Zinédine Zidane is a dream. According to Italian sources, including Calciomercato, the Saudi Federation hopes to convince the ex-Real Madrid coach to lead the national team. His arrival would bring immense visibility, both for the selection and for the Saudi Pro League.

ZIDANE, THE DREAM

Zidane is not the only option. Argentinian Ramon Diaz, currently coach of Corinthians, is also among the candidates. Having already managed Al-Hilal, one of the biggest Saudi clubs, his experience and success in the region could favor his appointment if the Federation favors a profile familiar from the local championship.

OTHER FAVORITE

Another name mentioned is that of Hervé Renard, who has already led Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team impressed by beating Argentina. Although he is currently in charge of the French women’s national team, contacts could be made for a return. His time in Saudi Arabia left him with a good reputation, and a return to the helm of the men’s selection cannot be ruled out.

Whether it is Zidane, Diaz or Renard, the Saudi Federation seems determined to strike hard with the next coach. After the massive investments in their championship, attracting a prestigious name to lead the national team would be a further step in the country’s ambition to become a major player in world football.
