ELMONT (New York) — Noah Dobson scored in the ninth round of the shootout and the New York Islanders defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Saturday at UBS Arena.
Dobson beat Canadiens goaltender Cayden Primeau glove side with a shot from the bottom of the slot to score his first career shootout goal.
Dobson added two assists to his record and goalie Semyon Varlamov made 21 saves for the Islanders (2-1-2).
Cole Caufield scored twice and Logan Mailloux scored his first NHL goal. Juraj Slakofsky collected two assists, while Primeau made 33 saves for the Canadiens (2-3-1).
Anders Lee pushed the rebound of a Jean-Gabriel Pageau shot into the back of the net to put the Islanders ahead 3-2 at 15:24 of the third period. Adam Pelech handed the puck to Pageau in the neutral zone to create a two-on-one surge.
Caufield took advantage of Varlamov’s blurred vision to beat him on the side of the shield with a shot from the left circle to tie the game 3-3 at 17:50.
The Islanders benefited from a power play in overtime, but were unable to score.
Bo Horvat gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead on a power play at 14:32 of the first period. Mathew Barzal had faked a shot from the top of the left circle before spotting Horvat, who fired a one-timer from the slot that beat Primeau on the glove side.
Kyle Palmieri doubled the Islanders’ lead to 2-0 just 2:24 later. He beat Primeau in the upper part of the shield side with a shot from the right circle.
Caufield cut the lead to 2-1 at 19:56 during a power play by collecting his own putback before beating Varlamov to the side of the shield with a shot from a tight angle.
Mailloux tied the game 2-2 by beating Varlamov on the shield side with a shot from the slot 59 seconds into the second period. Installed in the left corner, Jake Evans had spotted Mailloux alone in the slot.
Islanders forward Anthony Duclair left the game at 3:19 of the third period. After falling in the crease, he was unable to support himself on his right leg.
