NHL: Jesperi Kotkaniemi plays well in the center of the 2nd line; Hurricanes win 4-1

The Carolina Hurricanes’ second line, led by Jesperi Kotkaniemi, took care of the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 4-1 victory Friday night.

The former Canadiens first-round pick had two assists, while his linemates Martin Necas and Jack Roslovic both scored in the victory.

Since the start of the campaign, Kotkaniemi has had increased responsibilities, both at five-on-five and on the power play. He spent a little over 14 minutes on the ice with three shots on goal, two blocked shots and a differential of +1.

Rookie Jackson Blake also hit the target for the second time of the season, as did Carolina newcomer Shayne Gostibehere who scored on a power play. The 21-year-old striker scored the first goal of his career during the Canes’ last match.

Drew O’Connor opened the scoring for the Penguins midway through the 1st period with his 3rd goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Frederik Andersen made 25 saves in front of the Hurricanes cage to earn the victory.

His opponent Joel Blomqvist was very busy stopping 35 of the 39 pucks aimed at him.

The Hurricanes took advantage of two opportunities with a man advantage, while the Penguins were unable to realize their goal on five occasions.

The Penguins fell flat after an emotional victory Wednesday as captain Sidney Crosby reached the 1,600-point NHL mark, while his partner-in-crime Evgeni Malkin entered the 500-goal club.

During this game, Malkin and Crosby were unable to get a single shot on the opposing net.
