Toumani Camara and Ajay Mitchell ready to make Belgian basketball shine in the NBA

The 2024-2025 NBA season, the North American basketball league, will begin on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday with two Belgian players. Toumani Camara will begin his second season with Portland and was joined this summer in the Big League by Ajay Mitchell who will try to find a place in the rotation in Oklahoma City.

Camara is coming off a rather successful first season in the NBA on an individual level. Drafted in 52nd position by Phoenix, it was ultimately in the Portland jersey that the Brussels native made his debut. In a difficult season collectively with a last place in the Western Conference and a record of 21 victories and 61 defeats, Camara took the opportunity to quickly put himself in the spotlight.

Hampered by an injury at the end of the season, he played 70 matches, including 49 as a starter, averaging 7.5 points and 4.9 rebounds. Appreciated for his defensive qualities, Camara worked on his offensive game during the offseason and already showed it in the preseason with an average of 15.7 points in three matches.

For this new season, Camara will no longer be the only Belgian in the NBA after the arrival of Ajay Mitchell, drafted by New York in 38th position, a record for a Belgian player, then immediately transferred to Oklahoma City. The Liège leader signed a ‘two-way contract’ with the Thunder, leader of the West and semi-finalist in the playoffs in 2023-2024. This means he will be able to play for both the Thunder and its affiliate team in the G-League, the NBA’s developmental league.

Mitchell also had the opportunity to show off during the preseason, averaging 12 points in three games. Performances that could help him find a place in the rotation in a team that is one of the candidates for the title.
