Are we going to witness a huge surprise on the Liège side? Free from any contract since this summer, Nacer Chadli is currently training with the SL 16.
Birth Chadli (35 years old) has been without a club since this summer and the end of his contract at Westerlo, but contrary to what one might believe, the ex-Red Devil has not yet hung up his boots. A few months ago, however, information reached us that Chadli was considering quitting.
After a career at Westerlo hampered by injuries, the former Tottenham and Anderlecht player was not sure he would be able to get back into shape. But obviously, he is now hopeful of making a comeback. Indeed, according to the information revealed by The Last Hour and that we are able to confirm, Nacer Chadli is currently training with the SL16, the Standard U23s.
Chadli at Standard? Hard to imagine
He is currently maintaining his form there; It remains to be seen whether this will lead to anything. If this is the case, we doubt that Chadli really wants to engage with the red lantern of D1 ACFF, which still has no points in the third national level and seems condemned to a second consecutive descent.
But we also know that Nacer Chadli was partly trained at Standard, where people did not believe in him. Left for the Netherlands, he launched his career there, before discovering Belgian football… under the colors of RSC Anderlecht, in 2019-2020.
With the Mauve & Blanc, he had at times shown that he had lost none of his qualities, scoring 8 goals in 19 matches, but his regular physical problems had already hampered him. From 2020 to 2023, he will relaunch at Istanbul Basaksehir, returning to a very correct level.
The links between Turkey and Westerlo then allowed the former Spurs player to arrive in Campine and, there too, to shine intermittently. But his 2023-2024 season was very complicated (19 matches, no goals). It’s hard to imagine Standard taking such a risk, unless the level shown in training with the young Rouches was very impressive…
