Florian Maurice, Maxime Foltzer, Estelle Bonnardel, Quentin Devred, Bapstiste Duchamps and Astrid Novais received the gold medal in the animation category, Monday October 14, in London during the Student Oscars ceremony, awarded to young hopefuls in the 7th art. These four 5th year students from the prestigious Mopa 3D Animation School were rewarded for their final project study, “Goodbye my world”.

The winners’ short film tells the story of a man stuck in a sushi mascot costume, tries to cross to “say goodbye to the people he loves most” while a shower of meteorites falls on the planet.

France is regularly cited as a land of excellence for animation. In the experimental category, it is a Taiwanese short film (“A BrighterSummer Day for the Lady Avengers”) which topped the podium. The winner, Birdy Wei-Ting Hung, from the San Francisco film school (United States) filmed the sexual awakening of adolescents, during the 1910 plague epidemic in China.

This 51st edition of the Student Oscars is the first ceremony to be held entirely outside the United States. This choice reflects the new composition of the Academy of Arts and Sciences: a fifth of its members are not Americans. This year, more than half of the new members admitted were international, including the French director of “Anatomy of a Fall” Justine Triet and her German actress Sandra Hüller. The Student Oscars are very popular in Hollywood. Among past winners include Spike Lee, Pete Docter (creator of “Monsters Inc.” and “Up There”), Robert Zemeckis (director of “Back to the Future”) and Cary Fukunaga (director of “No Time to Die”).
