On March 23, 2023, Sion organized its 17th and final gala evening at CERM, in Martigny. As is the culinary custom, we ate tons of sauerkraut and other junk while applauding Kendji Girac on stage.
At the beginning of this year, the Tourbillon club resurrected its support meal but in another form, this time aimed at a wealthier clientele. This is how nearly 1,000 people, each having paid 800 francs, were treated to a gourmet meal on February 29, served as a starter to the Cup match won against Young Boys.
Since then, the question arose as to whether the Valais club would relaunch its big rally in 2025, which many of its supporters hoped for. However, this will not be the case, as Christian Constantin told us: “No, there will be no gala in 2025. To do one again, I would have had to do something exceptional. Better to stop at the top than to start the descent…”
The increasing difficulty of attracting stars to the Martigny stage is one of the reasons given. But this is not the only explanation… “The new constraints linked to the organization of such events, in particular the impossibility of organizing a giant raffle, are rather likely to discourage you”, specifies the boss of Whirlwind.
For 2025, rumor suggests that the boss of FC Sion would have imagined convincing… Céline Dion to come and perform in Valais. What is it really? “I fumbled… If I have Céline Dion coming to say good evening, we are already in the exceptional.”
Ultimately it won’t be the case. The tons of sauerkraut from FC Sion are really over. With them ends a tradition which saw thousands of French-speaking people converge on the CERM at the end of winter as the success of the gala evening of the Valais club went well beyond the cantonal borders…
