“Too light for the national team”: a former Anderlecht player criticized at home – Tout le football

Joshua Zirkzee has finally started to settle into the Dutch national team, after playing very little during the Euros. But a Dutch analyst is not convinced of his contribution to the Oranje.

Joshua Zirkzee (23 years old) had to wait for a last minute withdrawal from Euro 2024 to be taken back despite his superb season at FC Bologna. Even there, he remained on the bench during the three group matches and the round of 16, before playing a few minutes in the quarter and semi-final.

Since then, Zirkzee has transferred to Manchester United and therefore changed his status. Last September, he started against Bosnia-Herzegovina, playing 74 minutes, scoring and scoring and providing an assist.

This Friday, the former Anderlecht player was still in the starting line-up against Hungary, with less success. His performance left one analyst skeptical. Wim Kieftformer Dutch international (42 caps) who won the Euro in 1988 with the Oranje, is not convinced.

“Zirkzee is very good technically, but he behaves too little like a striker. He gives the impression that in his eyes, playing in a pleasant way is more important than scoring goals,” Kieft said in The Telegraph.

“For the moment, he is too light for the national team. He is a talent… but at 23, can we still describe him like that? Real talents have 250 matches at his age and have started at 16-17 years old, he only has three seasons at the highest level,” the analyst then asserts.
