MLB: Dodgers send a clear message in Game 1 against the Mets

SUMMARY

The Los Angeles Dodgers delivered a dominant performance in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, winning 9-0 over the New York Mets.

Dodgers pitchers have not allowed a run in 33 consecutive innings, a new National League postseason record. The previous record belonged to the New York Giants during the 1905 World Series. The Dodgers’ 33 scoreless innings tied the MLB record held by the Orioles, who inflicted this fate on the Dodgers during the World Series. from 1966.

The feat is all the more impressive because the Dodgers are without starters Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Tony Gonsolin, Gavin Stone, Dustin May and Shohei Ohtani, who has not pitched this season.

Jack Flaherty limited the Mets to two hits in seven innings of work. He struck out six batters and walked only two.

Flaherty left the mound to a standing ovation from the 53,503 in attendance at Dodger Stadium. The 28-year-old right-hander has been very useful to the Dodgers since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline.

His opponent Kodai Senga had problems from the start. He was removed from the game after only one and a third innings after giving up three earned runs

Max Muncy opened the scoring with a single in the 1st inning to send Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to the plate.

Shohei Ohtani added his two cents at the bottom of the 2nd when his single allowed Gavin Lux to cross the plate. Ohtani now has 16 hits in his last 19 appearances with runners on trails.

After another productive single from Tommy Edman, Ohtani sent his teammate to the plate when his arrow escaped Starling Marte.

Up 6-0 at the bottom of the 8th inning, Mookie Betts added insult to injury by emptying the bases which were all occupied thanks to a double.

Francisco Lindor (0 for 3) and Pete Alonso (0 for 3) were held in check by Dodgers pitchers.

The Dodgers, who were facing elimination after three games against the San Diego Padres, blanked them in the last two clashes of their section series.

Both teams will return to action on Monday.
