Even before the Senegalese Football Federation reacted to the information from L’Equipe, it was Habib Bèye himself who stepped up to deny the French sports daily.
After separating from Aliou Cissé by decision of the Ministry of Sports, the Senegalese Football Federation (Fsf) began looking for a new coach for the Lions.
If Pape Thiaw will sit on the bench for the double confrontation against Malawi as part of the 3rd and 4th days of the CAN 2025 qualifiers, or even during the last two in November, the Fsf ultimately aims for a more upscale profile .
Moreover, during the presentation of the Ufoa A trophy won by the Lion Cubs U20, the Senegalese football boss reiterated the FSF’s desire to continue with “local expertise”. An option which gave the results that we know with Aliou Cissé and which the body does not intend to abandon any time soon.
In this context, the newspaper L’Equipe announced yesterday Friday that the Fsf tried Habib Bèye. Free since his departure from Red Star, which he promoted to Ligue 2 at the end of last season, the former Senegalese international has however declined the offer, according to the same source. Which specifies that the Franco-Senegalese technician indeed has other plans for his immediate career.
But twist of theater! A few hours later, and even before the FSF reacted to this information from the French sports daily, it was the person himself who stepped up to deny the information: “It’s false information; I have never been contacted,” he said clearly on social networks. Clearly, the former Olympique de Marseille player still remains a potential candidate to succeed Aliou Cissé.
It must be said that his refusal from the Lions bench would have been surprising, if we know that Bèye has always expressed his intention to one day coach the Senegal national team.
The choices remain open
Note that among the potential candidates for the 2022 African champions bench, we also cite Omar Daf. Currently stationed at Amiens in Ligue 2, the former Sochalien has the advantage of having experience in the Lair having been one of Aliou Cissé’s deputies.
What about Hervé Renard? Compared to the other candidates mentioned, the French technician has the necessary experience having led African teams and won the Can twice, with Ivory Coast and Zambia. But its chances could be weighed down by the Fsf’s policy aimed at promoting local expertise.
We will also have to take into account the interim Pape Thiaw who also has a card to play, especially when he emerges victorious from the double confrontation against Malawi… in style.
So everything remains open!
