Barça loses a major lawsuit, a big check escapes it

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of Zenit Saint Petersburg in the dispute between it and FC Barcelona concerning the transfer of Malcom, carried out in 2019. Barça claimed 490,000 euros from the Russian club, a sum linked to a bonus clause in the Brazilian’s transfer contract. According to this clause, Zenit had to pay compensation every time the team qualified for the group stage of the Champions League, provided Malcom played a minimum number of matches in the Russian top division. However, after the exclusion of Russian clubs from European competitions in March 2022 following the war in Ukraine, FIFA ruled that Zenit did not have to pay this bonus. Barcelona did not accept this decision and took the matter to the CAS, which ultimately ruled in favor of the Russian club.

Malcolm moved a lot

Zenit acquired Malcom in 2019 for 40 million euros after his time at Barcelona, where he was recruited for the same sum. In July 2023, the Russian club sold Malcom to Al Hilal for 60 million euros, making this transfer the most expensive in the history of Russian football, surpassing that of Hulk, sold to Shanghai SIPG for 56 million in 2016. Malcom, the best player and top scorer in the Russian league, was a key signing for Al Hilal’s Portuguese coach Jorge Jesús. Trained at Corinthians, the Brazilian had previously played at Girondins de , before playing briefly at Barcelona, marking a career punctuated by significant transfers.
