“The match should never have been played”, the anger of the Greek captain after England-Greece

After Greece’s victory against England (2-1), Thursday in the League of Nations, the day after the death of Greek player George Baldock, captain Anastasios Bakasetas regretted that the meeting took place.

Following the death of George Baldock, found dead in his swimming pool on Wednesday evening, Greece did face England on Thursday evening at Wembley, after UEFA refused to postpone the match. “The match should never have been played in these circumstances,” regretted the Greek captain, Anastasios Bakasetas afterwards.

Forced to play against their will, the Greeks won 2-1 on England’s pitch, an unexpected victory which sounded like a tribute to Baldock, who had twelve caps with Greece. “I consider it the most important victory of my life,” Bakasetas said.

A message for the Greek media

Vangelis Pavlidis, author of a double including a second goal in added time, kissed the black armband he wore around his arm to dedicate his goals to his former teammate. Bakasetas, who gave a moving speech in the locker room before kick-off, assured him that the victory was obviously dedicated to Baldock.

The Greek captain also pointed the finger at some Greek media outlets for joking about Baldock’s death. “It’s a shame that some of your colleagues used this tragedy to make jokes, insinuations. This has to stop, we have to be human. Some didn’t understand it and it’s a real shame. They disrespected George’s family and everyone close to him.”
