Alvaro Morata recounts his depression, 3 months before the Euro

Three months before lifting the European champion trophy with Spain at Euro 2024, Alvaro Morata could no longer even “attach [ses] shoes. And when I did, I had to go home quickly, because my mouth was dry and my vision was blurred.” The captain of La Roja experienced a strong depression. He spoke about it on Spanish radio Cope this week.

“When you go through really hard times, with depression and panic attacks, it doesn’t matter what work you do or your personal situation,” says the AC Milan striker. You have to fight against this other person who lives inside you every day and every night. For me, the best thing to do was to leave Spain. I couldn’t take it anymore.” Thus, after winning the Euro, Morata chose to leave Atletico Madrid to join the Rossonera team.

But before that, he had to fight. “Three months before the Euro, I wasn’t even sure I would be able to play a match again. I didn’t know what was happening to me. It was a delicate and complicated moment, because I realized that what I liked most in life was becoming what I hated most. But thanks to people like (his teammate) Koke, (his coach) Diego Simeone, (Atletico executive director) Miguel Angel Gil, my psychiatrist and my mental coach, I achieved it.

And with a lot of strength and courage, Alvaro Morata (31 years old) escaped. To become the captain of the European champion selection.
