Identifying and curing bigorexia, this “vicious” addiction to sport

Can you be addicted to something that is good for you? Sport, valued by society, is rarely compared to a drug. Obviously, bigorexia (addiction to sport) is not easy to spot.

What warning signs?

According to Camille Raison, “prevention-training” project manager for the Addictions- association in , the warning signals are the same as for other addictions: “You have to see if the activity is an obsession and if there is no other source of pleasure. We will practice intensely and despite meetings with friends or activities we had before. »

Doctor Stéphane Prétagut, head of the addiction department at Nantes University Hospital, talks about the difficulties in stopping physical activity, even momentarily. “When there is an injury, there is often a transfer to other modes of sport, such as the runner who will strengthen the upper body”he says.

Why do we become addicted to sport?

According to Doctor Stéphane Prétagut, the release of endorphins can be habit-forming. Some individuals are also more vulnerable. “It is by digging into the person’s history and identifying another problem such as lack of self-confidence, stress or depression, that we will see if sport can be a source of addiction”explains the doctor. Sport then becomes an escape.

What risks?

“Bigorexia is vicious”assures Camille Raison. Among the risks: permanent dissatisfaction. “When we practice, she continues, we wait for this maximum achievement of pleasure, but at the end of the practice, we are never satisfied. » Added to this is the risk of injury and isolation. “There is also a frequent association with eating disorders”such as anorexia or bulimia, according to Doctor Stéphane Prétagut.

How to prevent?

In the event of suspicion about a loved one, Camille Raison advises non-violent communication. “You have to name your emotions by saying: I am worried about you”she suggests. According to Doctor Stéphane Prétagut, the problem has often been there for a long time and it must be identified as quickly as possible to take better action.
