Jan Vertonghen was hoping to have a great final year as a professional footballer. He signed a new contract with RSC Anderlecht, but for the moment, this season is turning into a nightmare for the former Red Devil. Het Nieuwsblad reports more bad news.
Vertonghen still not recovered
Vertonghen suffers from an overload on his Achilles tendons and played his last match on August 4 at Antwerp. The newspaper indicates that he will also miss the matches against Beerschot and Ludogorets. He is still dealing with his Achilles tendon pain.
Recently, Vertonghen said it would take a few more weeks for him to be back. Some sources even speak of a complete recovery after the New Year. For the moment, this is not on the agenda. In full rehabilitation with Lieven Maesschalck, Vertonghen still hopes to be able to play in 2024. An operation is not planned, because that would end his season.
Simic suspended
Anderlecht remains very careful with Vertonghen, but his absence on the field is a big loss. The club lacks depth in central defense, and another problem looms for the match against Beerschot, since Jan-Carlo Simic is suspended and will miss the trip to Kiel.
It is therefore likely that Leander Dendoncker will have to help out in defense. Amando Lapage, from RSCA Futures, is another option, but his performances have not yet convinced. Nathan De Cat is also an alternative, but he is primarily a midfielder. Another possibility would be to move Killian Sardella back into the center, which would allow Thomas Foket to occupy the right side. It seems obvious that Anderlecht will have to recruit an additional central defender in January.
