NHL: The Avalanche confident of retaining Mikko Rantanen

The Colorado Avalanche are hopeful of retaining the services of forward Mikko Rantanen once the upcoming season is over.

The Finn, who has always played with the Avalanche since his first round draft in 2015, will become an unrestricted free agent next July.

Rantanen played a major role in winning the Stanley Cup in 2022 when he totaled 25 points, including 20 assists.

Not at all worried, team general manager Chris MacFarland was confident during an interview with NHL.com to retain the services of Rantanen. “These are not easy contracts to tie up. The player obviously has the right to complete autonomy, and the team must make intelligent decisions in the short and long term. »

Rantanen, who has amassed 617 points since the start of his career, doesn’t seem to be worried either. He believes that common ground will be found. “It’s business, and it always ends up being resolved,” the player declared during the camp. I’m here to play hockey and prepare for another season. »

The Avalanche will rely heavily on Rantanen and center Nathan MacKinnon at the start of the campaign. Captain Gabriel Landeskog has still not received the green light to return to play following several knee operations, including a cartilage transplant on May 10, 2023. Forward Valeri Nichushkin is suspended until November, less.

The Avalanche will begin their regular season Wednesday against the Vegas Golden Knights
